Placemaking For Inclusion: Online Course for Educators & Youth Workers
Lektion

As a youth worker, there are several ways to ensure inclusion in youth groups. Some strategies include creating a safe and welcoming environment, actively listening to and valuing the opinions and experiences of all youth, fostering diversity and equity, and promoting active participation and leadership opportunities for all members of the group.

One way to ensure inclusion is to incorporate the principles of “positive youth development” into your work. This approach emphasizes the importance of creating supportive environments, promoting youth engagement and leadership, and valuing diversity and cultural competence (National Research Council and Institute of Medicine, 2002).

Another strategy is to use “youth-led” approaches, where young people are actively involved in decision-making and planning processes. This approach promotes youth empowerment and ownership over the group’s activities and goals, which can lead to increased participation and engagement (McDonald et al., 2001).

In addition, it is essential to consider the diverse needs and experiences of all youth in the group, including those from marginalized communities. This can involve creating space for dialogue and reflection around issues of diversity and equity, and actively seeking out and valuing the perspectives and experiences of all members of the group (Jones and Perkins, 2004).
